Nuclear energy is the energy that is produced by a nuclear reaction. It is often called atomic energy, because in a nuclear reaction, the atoms of certain materials are either split (fission) or joined (fusion). This reaction causes the release of great amounts of energy and radiation. This radiation is very powerful and dangerous to living things. Every element is made up of atoms that have a central core, called the nucleus. The nucleus is made up of protons, which are positive particles, and neutrons, which have no charge. Surrounding this nucleus are negatively charged particles, called electrons, and the atom is held together by weaker electrical forces and very strong nuclear forces.
